JUNIOR
COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2008/2009
(Report
by Colin Bennett)
Well the first weekend of the County Juniors is over and
you will be pleased to know that once again the County can be very proud of the
young players that travelled to Grantham on Saturday. The general attitude and
enthusiasm of all of them was remarkable. And even when we were facing some
very strong opposition they continued to give 110% until the end.
The Team:
1/ Jake Collins
2/ Martin West
3/ James Faulker
1/ Rachel West
2/ No second girl
As you know they play in Div 1 and having lost Ryan and
DURHAM V SUFFOLK
Durham having won the division last year had similar
problems to us and we found that some of their top players were not here. And
we were quick to realise that they really had 2 strong players. There number
one boy Michael Hain and there number one girl Sarah Robinson. James and Jake
made short work of Durham’s 2nd and 3rd boys to even
the scores at 2-2. Then it was Martin against Michael. Martin had played him
before but never won….Until now. After some fantastic attacking rallies martin
came out 11-9 winner in the 5th in what was surely one of Martins
best wins as well as one of the best matches of the day. Rachel then beat
Ester Soos to make it 4-2. James then had another convincing 3-0 win over
Matthew Walker before Jake also beat Michael Hain in 4 games to make it
6-2.Martin continued his winning ways with an easy win over Sam Howard
3-0. Whilst Rachel narrowly lost in 4 games to the experienced and very
consistent Sarah Robinson. A fantastic result finishing DURHAM 3 SUFFOLK 7
Essex 1 has possibly the strongest team in the league this
year and they proved far too strong for Suffolk. But having said that even
though we lost this match. It brought the best out of our juniors and they all
played above their comfort zone to try in any way possible to get something from
it. But it was Jakes win over
Having seen Bedfordshire play earlier we were hopeful to
maybe get something from this match. But despite young Rachel winning both her
matches and Jake winning against James Coleman, it was not to be. Having said
that Martin was subject to an appalling umpire’s decision at 8-8 in the 4th
game of his very close encounter with Nathan Forbes. Which may have resulted in
an additional win for Suffolk? And Jake also lost 11-9 in the 5th
against Ben Gardner. So we can consider ourselves a little unlucky not to get a
draw. Final score Suffolk 3 Bedfordshire 7.
The footnote on this was that once again it was a very
enjoyable day. With all of the team giving everything they had to try and get a
result. The remaining four matches are in March. And I am sure they will be
more than ready for the challenge.
Player of the day = RACHEL WEST, for winning 50% of her games.
But more importantly for never giving up and showing great character throughout
the day.
Many thanks to Tony West and Dawn Collins for their help
during the day, it was greatly appreciated
