COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2007/2008

CADETS (under 15yrs) COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS

The second and final day of the Championships took place this month at Draycott Table Tennis Club, near Derby. Each team consists of two girls and three boys - for Suffolk: Becky Macintyre; Rachel West; Martin West, George Kizis and Aston Dowdy. At the end of the competition Suffolk finished in mid table - an encouraging result for the first year back in the Championship.

The team experienced highs and lows during the day, which began at 9.00am and the last match commenced at 4.15pm. The first was against Shropshire, where we came out with a 9-1 win, George losing out to Shropshire no1 in four games.

The second match against Cheshire brought the team down to earth, losing 0-10. Becky, Rachel and Martin taking their opponents to four games. Fortunes then swung back to Suffolk in the third match against Clwyd, who could only field three boys, as their two best girls were away representing Wales, and the two replacement girls had other priorities! Suffolk won the match 8-2, the highlight being Martin's win, in four games, over Huw Jones (Welsh no 2 Junior) a highly talented player. George and Aston also contributed to the Suffolk cause with a win each.

Lancashire were the opponents for the fourth match, which was a closely contested affair. Lancashire quickly set up a 3-0 lead. However, by the time Martin and Rachel had played both their sets the match score was 3-5 to Lancashire. Becky then won in three straight games to bring the match score to 4-5.

Aston, who was playing their no2, managed to take the set to four games, before losing 9-11, and the match went to Lancashire 4-6.

The fifth and final match against Nottinghamshire, saw Suffolk suffer its heaviest loss of the day, unable to win a single game in the 0-10 defeat.

The range of results indicate that Suffolk Cadet table tennis in this season is at a level that bodes well for the future. Becky, Martin and Aston will no longer be eligible for Cadets next season, so the county will be looking for replacements to play alongside Rachel and George in the 2008/2009 season.
