COUNTY SENIOR TOURNAMENT 4/10/09

Report by Andrew Dosher

With 26 entries this year and seven trophies to play for there were many exciting matches at this season’s event.

In the men's doubles event both top seeds were knocked out at the first hurdle, number one seeds Andrew Warner and Charles Fulcher lost surprisingly easily to Jimmy Farrow and Richard Goodhand 3-0 while father and son combination Malcolm and Ryan Collins lost in three very close games to Kevin James and Michael Wright.

In the end It was Nigel Hodder and Gary Young that overcame Ian Brown and Paul Broxton in the final.

In the final of the womens doubles Aimee Sparkes and Claire Emmerson overcame Vicky Gray and Sonja Talbot 11-4 in the final set.

Hodder took out another title with partner Talbot in the final of the Mixed doubles beating the fancied favourites Ryan Collins and Sparkes 3-1 which was well deserved as they had also beaten the number two seeds in the semi's Warner and Gray.

Hodder had a fantastic day and in the handicap singles carried all before him, unfortunately his final opponent James conceded due to illness, after doing so well to get there having beaten Warner and Sparkes on the way.

Former mens's singles runner up Hodder showed a rich vein of form winning three titles on the day.

One of the talking points on Sunday was the improved form of Portuguese player Rui Campos who has always had the potential but not delivered when it mattered, however in the restricted singles he took out a number of higher ranked players in Broxton, Sparkes and James on route, and it looked like he would beat defending champion Richard Goodhand in the final as he powered his way to a 2-0 lead, however Goodhand's defensive web eventually stifled the flow of his opponent and despite a spirited effort at the death it was the holder that retained his title.

In the womens singles all five entrants played a round robin event.

Claire Emmerson with two hard fought five set victories over former champion Vicky Gray and Sonja Talbot saw her take the runner up spot, while defending champion Aimee Sparkes beat all her group opponents to retain her title.

In the men's singles Hodder continued his good form through to the semi's with wins over Michael Wright and Gary Young, however there he couldn’t contain the number one seed and top England 100 player Ryan Collins losing 3-0

In the other half Wayne Shaw using a hard bat had powered through against Andrew Dosher and Ian Brown, there he met Andrew Warner who had seen off Paul Broxton and Malcolm Collins.

This was highly entertaining as Shaw blocked and hit with Warner trying to play his control game, in the end a very tight first game which could have gone either way proved decisive as Warner edged through in four close games.

Ryan Collins and Andrew Warner have played in the last three Ipswich finals, and they have all been memorable and won by the favourite Collins.

This final was no different as it saw Collins at times throw the kitchen sink at Warner who still managed to get most balls back from all areas of the court.

In a tight first set Collins just got home at nine, however a good start in the second set for Warner get even better as he ran away with it. Would Collins regain his composure in the third set?

Another bad start saw desperation set in for the favourite and he started to pull his shots missing by his standards some straight forward shots, amid growing confidence from Warner who was now beggeing to believe that he could take the Suffolk crown, the third set to Warner at 5.

Not surprisingly Collins focused and played some breathtaking power shots to win the fourth and set up a decider.

Both players remained calm in the final set and stuck to the task and at 6-6 it was hard to call a winner, however as so often he does Collins went for it and with greater overall power got home at 11-8 for his second singles title.

Andrew Warner deserves a lot or credit for his performance coming so close, while Ryan Collins is still only 19, and if he stays fit and continues to play he could get somewhere near the record amount of singles titles won by Suffolk’s best two players Stuart Palmer and John Kitchener.

SUFFOLK COUNTY TABLE TENNIS ASSOCIATION

JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 2008/9 Held on 14th February 2009.

Stowupland High School Sports Centre hosted the Suffolk County Junior table tennis championships with this years entries being at the highest level for some years. This is a reflection of increased participation both within schools and local clubs and bodes well for the future of the sport. Star of the show was Jake Collins (Ipswich), in his last year as a junior, fully justifying his No. 1 seeding position and cruising through to the final to meet No. 2 seed Martin West from Mildenhall – in similar fashion, Martin carried all before him in 5 straight sets victories to set up an intriguing final.  Following a tight first set Jake produced some magical aggressive shot making on both wings to clinch victory (13-11, 11-8,11-3) to take the junior title for the first time. Jake’s loss to the Suffolk junior team is a significant gain to the Suffolk Seniors as he has already made a huge impact at senior level being currently ranked at No. 2 behind his brother, Ryan.

There were no real shocks in the Boys U13 group matches with all 8 seeds coming through to contest the quarter-finals. Pick of these matches was Connor Laird(Stowmarket) playing Callum Wilkinson(Bury) with Connor coming out on top with a 12-10, 11-9, 10-12, 11-6 win with the more consistent winners. Again the seeding went to plan with the top 4 seeds coming through to the semi-finals. William Hall (Rougham) had a comfortable win over Max Boulter (Bury) 11-8, 11-5, 11-8 but Connor Laird  had a much tougher match against a fired up Ruairidh Penman (Ipswich), but with the match level at 2 sets all Connor tired to a rampant Ruairidh who clinched victory with an emphatic 11-4 deciding set. An entertaining final saw the match finely balanced at 1 set all but with William Hall being just the more consistent with his winners deservedly secured the Boys U13 championship with the next 2 closely fought sets – 12-10, 12-10.

In the girls U13 event, Nos 1 & 2 seeds, Rachel West (Mildenhall) and newcomer Lucy Zhu (Stowmarket) topped their respective groups with the runners-up spots being secured by Megan Bollen (Stowmarket) who showed real determination in her 3 group wins along with Natalie Wills (Ipswich) who made a positive start with 2 wins. Both semi-finals saw comfortable wins for both county players, Rachel and Lucy. In an attractive 4 set final Rachel ran out a worthy champion 11-4, 11-9, 8-11, 11-6 but later on Lucy was to have her revenge in the U15 event – this was played on a round robin basis with 5 girls contesting this final. With both girls winning 3 games each this championship was settled by a more consistent performance from Lucy who defeated a shocked Rachel in 3 straight sets 12-10, 11-9, 11-8. There will no doubt be some great battles ahead.

In the boys U15 event, 31 players started out in 8 groups. Of the 16 players who went through to contest the 1st round knock-out all 8 of the top seeds came through, 7 as group winners and 1 as a group runner-up. There was some excellent play in all of these matches, most notably Alex Holmes (Stowmarket) overcoming group 7 winner William Woods (Rougham) 11-8,14-12, 11-7 and Jack Anthony (Bury) defeating the on form Ruairidh Penman (Ipswich) 12-10,11-5, 12-10. In the quarter-finals No 1 seed George Kizis (Bury) came through a testing time against Alex Holmes 11-8, 14-12, 11-7, William Hall (Rougham) again excelled to knock-out Group 5 winner Kieran Perez (Ipswich) and playing with some consistency and flair, Joe Easdown (Bury) claimed the scalp of Jack Anthony with a comfortable 11-4, 11-4, 11-5 win. The final semi-final berth was secured by last seasons U13 winner, defender, Rhys Davies (Haverhill) with backhand push and chop came through an attractive encounter with Ipswich promising youngster Elliot Branton 8-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-4. Both semi-finals produced fine matches with George Kizis (Bury) maintaining his winning streak by defeating U13 champion William Hall (Rougham) 7-11, 11-4, 11-4 11-4 and Joe Easdown (Bury) breaking down the huge defensive qualities of Rhys Davies 8-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7, 11-4 in a 5 set thriller. In a see-saw outstanding final with  both players set for attack, George came back from 1-2 sets down to clinch the Boys u15 title 8-11, 11-6, 12-14, 11-3, 11-8.

Results from County Junior Championships held on Saturday 16th. February 2008.

Held recently at the County Table Tennis Centre, Stowupland High School, these championships produced some quality attacking play none more so than from brother and sister, Martin & Rachel West (Stowmarket/Bury). Both have worked hard at their games and are becoming accomplished players, achieved in a very short time span.

In the Boys U13,   No.1 seed Rhys Davies (Haverhill), Alasdair Penman (Stowmarket), William Hall (Bury St. Edmunds) and Elliot Branton (Ipswich)  came through their groups to contest the semi-finals. A very close encounter between Rhys and Elliot saw Rhys coming through into the final to meet William Hall who won out over Elliot in 3 straight sets. In the Schools Championships 2 weeks previously both Rhys and William came through to contest an outstanding final with the attacking style of William just edging out defender, Rhys – this time the result was completely reversed with Rhys winning comfortably in 3 straight sets.

In the Girls U13, a round robin saw Rachel West (Stowmarket/Bury) comfortably beat off all opposition with newcomer Alice Leather (Bury) taking the runners-up spot.

The Boys U15 groups produced some tight finishes, with No 1 seed Martin West (Stowmarket/Bury, Aston Dowdy (Ipswich), No 2 seed George Kizis (Bury) and Rory Penman (Ipswich/Stowmarket) coming through to contest the semi-finals. The seedings

proved to be correct as Martin and George came through fairly comfortably to contest the final. Throwing caution to the wind both players went for all out attack producing some fine rallies. Martin, being a little more consistent came through to win in 4 engrossing sets.

In the Girls U15 event, only 2 entries were received so this went straight to a final between Becky MacIntyre (Stowmarket/Bury) and Rachel West (Stowmarket/Bury).

In what was an extremely close encounter with both girls liking to attack the ball Becky

came through to win in 4 tight sets.

The largest entry came in the Boys U18 although some players were playing up out of their age group. Both George Kizis (Bury) and William Vale (Bury) cruised through to win their group with runners-up Martin West (Stowmarket/Bury) and Aston Dowdy (Ipswich)  respectively. A gripping final followed which went right to the wire, 16-14

in the 5th. set to Martin having been 2-1 down and having lost comfortably to George in their group encounter. So a great day for the West family having captured both Boys U18 and U15 titles and Girls U13 – and it did not stop there as brother and sister combination came through 3 matches to clinch the Doubles title.

Final event was the Girls U18 – a round robin which saw County No 1 Sian Cook (Ipswich) dominating her group with measured use of attack and spin, winning all

her matches comfortably – runner-up was Becky MacIntyre.

COUNTY VETS TOURNAMENT 13/1/2008

Report by Andrew Dosher

Andrew Warner, Malcolm Collins, Clive Grimwood and John Seabrook were the success stories of this seasons Suffolk veteran table tennis championships reaching a number of finals to take silverware.

The first event of the day the handicap singles, which pitches players of all standards together with a format of one game and first to 31, saw some tight matches and an eventual winner in Clive Grimwood from the Bury league over Ipswich's John Seabrook, Clive performing perhaps better than his handicap suggested.

Seabrook though got his revenge by beating Grimwood in the final of the restricted singles 11-9 in the decider.

Peter Fordham won the over 60's event with victory over John Seabrook.

In the over 50's singles Malcom Collins faced Andrew Holmes and in a tight finish Collins saved five game points to take the match 3-1.

In the over 40's singles there were groups first before the knockout stage.  In group one Phil Sinclair took a leg off number one seed Andy Warner, while Andrew Dosher was fortunate to beat Colin Baxter from 3-8 down in the decider.

In the quarter finals Malcolm Collins was a comfortable winner over David Gaught in their quarter final, while the main upset of the day was number two seed Dosher losing to Ken James, Dosher usually effective against combination bats was beaten in four sets.

Andy Holmes found Colin Baxter a handful in their encounter and just won deuce in the fifth, while Warner saw off Ken Lewis 3-1.

In the semi finals Warner won the first set easily against Holmes but found his opponent in the last three games much tougher, Warner won 3-1.

In the other semi Collins faced a stiff challenge from James but with the first four games shared it was Collins that showed some superb hitting to romp through the decider.

The final was excellent as Collins continued his attacking form to take the first at 5, Warner responded with his own attacking game to equate also at 5, then two tight games shared at 9 saw a decider which see sawed until Warner got his nose in front from 6 all to eventually win the title

SUFFOLK CLOSED SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 11th November 2007

Report by Andrew Dosher

Ryan Collins confirmed his status as the best player in Suffolk at the weekend with a number of dazzling displays to take his first Suffolk singles title at Stowupland.

In the woman’s singles in a round robin event that went to a count back it was Vicky Gray who took her fourth title on the trot.

Unfortunately numbers were down again with just 16 male players and five woman players, this didn't deter a number of players in their attempt for silverware though.

The handicap got the event underway which gives players from all standards the chance to compete, it is just one game up to 31 and one of the highlight matches was Gary Young's match with Nicola Doy, Young trailed 29-8 and looked to be out, however he staged a remarkable comeback to get to just 29-30 down only to lose the next point! Nicola eventually went on to take the title over Ryan Collins, Ryan did however start form -7 against a plus 22 score line!

In the restricted singles Jason Annal in an early round came from 0-2 down against Ian Brown for a stunning win. Number one seed Malcolm Collins came through to the final to meet Mark Lewis, in a fluctuating game it was Lewis who showed some superb attacking shots to deserve his title.

In the mixed doubles it was Aimee Sparkes and Richard Hutchinson who overcame Vicky Gray and Andrew Warner, the men’s doubles not surprisingly were won by Ryan and Jake Collins over Andy Warner and Malcolm Collins, while in the woman’s doubles Aimee Sparkes and Sian Cooke beat Vicky Gray and Sonja Talbot.

In the woman’s singles round robin Sonja Talbot stunned number two seed Vicky Gray by recovering from 10-6 down in the fourth to save four match points and win the match, however other matches went Vicky’s way and she won her other games 3-0, Sian Cook also beat number one seed Aimee Sparkes, which meant that Sian finished as runner up.

In the men’s singles there were four groups of four with all players seeded, the seedings proved accurate as all eight seeds came through to the knock out stage, there were a few close calls in the group stage as Mark Lewis took a leg off Jake Collins as did father Malcolm in group one and in group four Richard Ingle just went down in five sets to Andrew Dosher.

This followed with the top four seeds also getting to the semis as Jake was too powerful for Gary Bloomfield, Andrew Warner beat Dosher in four sets, Richard Hutchinson took out Gary Young 3-0 and Ryan Collins beat Wayne Shaw 3-0.

In the semi's the Ryan looked awesome against Hutchinson looping at will against some of the best returns using his serve to set himself up, despite a brave attempt by Hutchinson who took the third set Ryan cruised through in fourth to reach the final.

The other semi was more even and exiting as Jake Collins played Andrew Warner, Jake took the first set but Warner got off to a good second leg which he won and then went 2-1 up, back came Jake to just take it to a decider but is seemed Andy was sharper on the exchanges as he led 8-4 and 9-7 however with some determined play much to the frustration of Warner it was Jake that made it through.

So we had history being made as the first brothers to play in a Suffolk Closed singles final. Jake seeded one due to his national junior ranking found number two seed Ryan in super form, Ryan’s array of forehand and back hand shots put pressure on his brother throughout, though it wasn't all one way, there some good rallies and in the second set with Ryan leading 1-0 Jake put together some power shots to earn himself game point, this though spurred on Ryan to his trademark play and he dully saved game point and went on to take the next two sets for his first senior men’s title.

SUFFOLK SENIOR CLOSED CHAMPIONSHIPS 29th October 2006

(Report by Andrew Dosher)

This years Suffolk Senior closed table tennis championships were arguably the most exciting & hard fought in years, with many seeding upsets.

In the men’s singles of the eight top seeds only the winner made it past the quarter finals.

Defending champion Dave Cole was unwell & Wayne Shaw had family commitments, while second & fourth seeds Ryan & Jake Collins failed to qualify from their groups.

The main talking point was the play of new player Rohit Kumar who has only been playing in division one of the Ipswich league.

As no one knew his playing ability he was put in group two with Ryan Collins & Richard Hutchinson, he trailed Ryan 0-2 in their game but came back to win deuce in the fifth, he also took out Richard Hutchinson also in five games. This meant that who ever lost between Ryan & Richard would go out as it went last years runner up & number two seed Ryan went out losing 3-0.

In group four Gary Young played above is seeding with first time wins over Andrew Dosher & number four seed Jake Collins to leave the match between these players to determine who would join him, after a hard four set win it was Dosher that went through.

In the quarters Kumar continued his progress with a comfortable win over former champion Dosher, as Andrew Warner just missed out against Nigel Hodder 9 in the decider, Hutchinson won 3-0 against Young & Aaron Self  beat fellow Bury player Tony West 3-2.

In the semi’s Hutchinson over came Hodder in four sets, while Self gave a good account of himself losing 3-1 to Kumar.

In the final Kumar was looking to become a winner from an unseeded position, where as Hutchinson was looking to avenge his earlier group loss & become champion for the fourth time.

Kumar just did enough to take the first set, but the game was set as a cat & mouse encounter with neither player totally comfortable against the other, Kumar looping & smashing against the defensive grit of Hutchinson. The next three sets were all tight as Hutchinson used all his experience in defence & attack, one particular rally saw Hutchinson at the edge of the arena chop an unbelievable shot from Kumer & then race in to play an impossible backhand winner from the tightest of angles. Hutchinson eventually won his fourth men’s singles title in seven years & after Suffolk legends John Kitchener & Stuart Palmer become the third most successful men’s singles winner in county history.

Amazingly enough in the restricted singles which excludes the highest seeded players, Kumar lost at the first hurdle to former premier player Rex Manning 3-2.

Manning made it all the way to the final where he was beaten by another new player to the league Nitan Shrivastrava.

In the woman’s singles Vicky Gray once again lifted the title for the umpteenth time in a round robin group, Sian Cook showed her improvement with a win over Suffolk number three lady Clare Emmerson to get the runners up spot.

In the handicap & under 21 singles Ryan Collins beat father Malcolm & Aaron Self respectively.

Clare Emmerson & Sian Cook beat Vicky Gray & Sonja Talbot for the womans doubles, while it was another success for Hutchinson & Bloomfield & Warner & Gray in the men’s & mixed doubles respectively.

In the Junior event 43 players participated with 6 players from Capel St. Mary making their presence felt.

In the under 18 boys singles Lok Wong from Bury came through to the semi finals & was unseeded, a terrific effort but he wasn't able to halt Champion Lee Barnes & went down in straight sets. In the other semi final brothers Ryan & Jake played with Ryan winning 3-1

The final was much looked forword to as this season Ryan & Lee have played a number of times Ryan beating Lee at the Ipswich top 12 & the Suffolk senior championships, while Lee won their league encounter.

This game didn't dissapoint as the players played in front of a large crowd, Barnes took the first set but was pegged back in the next & just lost the third at duce, in the fourth Ryan had two match points at 10-8 but Barnes showed his mettle saving a match point with a spectacular shot & eventually took the fourth, in the fifth Ryan led 6-5 & then didn't score another point as Barnes retained his title.

In the under 18 girls Chelsea Bennett was a clear winner winning all three of her games in this round robin event, in a count back Gemma Butler was the runner up.

It was good to see a number of new juniors coming through & in the girls under 15 & under 13 singles Stacey Howard beat Alice Carroll for top spot to runner up in a round robin event.

Josh Broadbent gave Jake Collins a difficult second set but went down 3-0 in the final of the under 15 boys singles, Josh though got some silverware by winning the under 13 boys singles.

Suffolk county chairman Geoff Brook was particularly pleased with the attendance & performance of some of the newer players & praised Ron & Reine Clark for their help with the junior event.

In the Veterans event's Fred Dove in the early part of the day swiftly got to the final of the over 50's events beating Clive Grimwood & Phil Sinclair on route, he was joined by Dave Halliday who had come from 0-2 to beat Ian Brown in the semi's.

In the final Dove ran out a 3-0 with all games being close.

Dove & Halliday again played in the handicap final but as Halliday isn't ranked in Suffolk he was given a good handicap that Dove wasn't able to catch, Halliday ran out a 2-0 winner.

In the restricted final Ian Brown just lost out in a thriller with Malcolm Collins deuce in the fifth.

In the mens doubles Hallday & Tallent knocked out number two seeds Dosher & Fulcher & then went down to Warner & Dove in the final

3-1.

Paul Packwood, Peter Fordham & Dave Halliday played a round robin to determine the over 60's singles champion, Hallday won beating the other players.

In the main event the over 40's men's singles there were four groups with the top two players going through to the knockout stage.

Both the top two seeds Fred Dove & Andrew Dosher won all their games to go through as winners, but in group 3 Warner went down to Andrew Holmes & finished second, while Dave Halliday beat Nigel Hodder to be the group winner there.

At the semi final stage all top four seeds still came through, Warner beat Dosher 3-0 & saved game points in both the first two games, while Dove came through 3-1 against Hodder.

In the final the first two sets were shared, but Warner was playing at his best & even though Dove was struggling with an injury & conceded later in the fourth set found it hard to contain his opponents backhand, Warner a deserved winner.

The Suffolk Closed championships held at Sowupland, bore witness to the new young tallent emerging in the county plus the quality of one of the more experienced campainers new to the championships.

In the womans singles there were two groups of three players, number one seed Aimee Sparkes overcame Claire Emmerson in her group to come top while Vicky Gray won her group & then faced Claire Emmerson in the semi final, this game had the attention of the whole audience & affter a very hard battle Gray saved a match point to win duece in the fifth set.

Aimee Sparkes accounted for Sonja Talbot in her semi & for the third year on the trot faced Gray. Number two seed Gray went two sets up but found the going tougher in the third as Sparkes showed some power forhands to lead 10-8, Gray though saved two game points before closing the match out for her second successive title.

The mens's singles had many classic matches & of the group matches only Nigel Hodder of the top eight seeds failed to win his group as he went down to Tony West, but with two seeds going through Hodder qualified & faced Fred Dove in the first round in a repeat of this seasons Top 12 semi final where he held four match points befoe losing. This time Hodder deservedly won 3-1 in a seeding upset.

There were more upsets as top 12 winner Ryan Collins who had early lost to three time winner Richard Hutchinson in their group match took on defending champion Lee Barnes, Ryan matched power with power to win 3-1 in a game that brought the hall to a virtual standstill as players playing on other tables stopped to watch.

In another first round encounter Jake Collins took on Andrew Warner this again had the spectators captivated & saw both players holding match points before Warner using his inspired back hand flick kill got home.

In the quarter finals Dave Cole overcame Tony West 3-0 while Warner had another thriller with Ryan Collins, this again went the distance with Ryan edging it 11-9 in the decider.

Wayne Shaw overcame Hodder in their match 3-1 as Hodder rallied to save the third set after being behind, but found Shaw in no mood to lose.

Andrew Dosher won his quarter over Richard Hutchinson at nine in the fourth set.

The first semi saw Dosher push Cole all the way in the first two sets before Cole's all out attacking play saw him through 3-1 & Shaw showed stiff resistance before going down to Ryan by 3-1.

The final was extroudinary as the first two sets were won by the closest of margins by Cole & then Ryan just 15 years old blew Cole away in the next two sets haveing no trouble attacking the Cole serve & looping winners of some of Coles best attacking shots. Unfortunately for Ryan, Cole who had seemed bemused by the youngsters power up untill then got of to the perfrect start & with his confidence returned produced a number of power drives to restrict his opponent to just one point in the final game which hardley does justice to the effort & calmness Ryan Showed when 0-2 down. This will go down as a classic encounter with expericence just winning over youth, but none will doubt that Ryan is destined for major honours most certainly in the county, while Cole showed just how good a player he will be for the county.

The restriced singles was won for the third time by Tony West, he enjoyed wins over Ryan & Malcolm Collins before beating Ian Brown in the final.

In the under 21 singles Lee Barnes overcame Aaron Self who had earlier showed some excellent form by beating Ryan.

Ryan did enjoy victory in the handicap singles final beating Cole.

There were some tight matches in the doubles & new pairing Dosher & Sian Cook were unfortunate to lose to Hutchinson & Aimee Sparkes in the mixed event as they led 10-7 in the decider, Sian showing some good touches at times to help get the pairing so close.

Warner & Gray eventually overcame Hutchinson & Sparkes in three tight sets in the final.

In the woman's event Emmerson & Sparkes were winners from Gray & Sonja Talbot in a round robin event.

In the mens's doubles Fulcher & Barnes came from 0-2 to beat Cole & Dosher earlier on, but were beaten in the final by Shaw & Richard Ingle.

At the end of a breathtaking day’s play there emerged two new holders of the men’s & woman’s singles title at Stowupland High school.

.

The night before men’s top seed Paul Cicchelli had called off & with other seeds unavailable the men’s draw had to be restructured.

In group one Richard Hutchinson was paired with former Essex top player Tony West who has made a comeback in the Bury St Edmunds league this season & Hutchinson emerged a 3-0 winner.

In all other groups the seedings went as predicted other than in groups seven & eight where Andrew Holmes found a 2-0 lead not enough to stop the talented Paul Broxton, & Lee Barnes found Ian Browns defence too stiff in their encounter.

The main draw saw some fascinating matches, a number involving Ipswich champion Andrew Warner, firstly he narrowly overcame team mate Richard Ingle 11-9 in the decider & then beat Suffolk junior number one Lee Barnes at 11-8 in the fifth in the quarters.

The other two outstanding games in the men’s quarter finals were between Tony West & Fred Dove plus Wayne Shaw against Andrew Dosher.

Tony West seeded just 13 as the committee were unsure of his current playing ability created the seeding upset of the tournament by coming from 0-2 down to beat number 2 seed & top 12 champion Fred Dove.

Perhaps not such a surprise when you consider that at his best West was a leading division one national league player.

Dosher suffered a big scare coming from 1-2 down to edge the fifth 11-8 against Shaw in their match, Shaw a little unfortunate to lose.

In the semi’s firstly Hutchinson overcame Warner in an absorbing five ender, then Dosher came from a leg down against West to edge the middle two legs before winning in the fourth comfortably.

For Dosher this was his third final yet the one domestic Suffolk title he hadn’t won, while Hutchinson had won this title three times.

Dosher determined to avenge his defeat against his opponent in last years final year took the first two legs but was pegged back in the fourth after having a match point.

Hutchinson went 3-0 up in the fourth but from then on was under the cosh as Dosher saw out the set at 7 to finally take the title for the first time. For Hutchinson game in defeat this was perhaps one game too many on the day.

In the woman’s single event the good news was that the top woman did play despite reports earlier that this event clashed with a woman’s national league match & it didn’t disappoint.

The top four women played a round robin event & in the first game Vicky Gray survived a spirited effort from Sonja Talbot to win 7 in the decider, Aimee Sparkes then beat her friend & team mate Claire Emmerson 3-0.

Emmerson then just lost out in four sets to Gray, while Sparkes set up a final encounter with Gray after beating Talbot 3-1.

In the final, number one seed Gray was on previous form expected to beat the number two seed having never lost to her before

However Sparkes showed how she has improved & took the game to her opponent showing a wide range of attacking shots to win comfortably in four sets for her first woman’s singles title. Sister Becky will have to watch out next season!

In the Handicap singles where players are graded to give everyone a chance the final was between Hutchinson & West & in an enthralling final Hutchinson came back from 0-2 down to just lose out at 11-9 in the fifth.

West took out another title winning the restricted singles beating Ipswich’s Richard Ingle in the final, despite losing 3-0 Ingle showed a lot of class on route to this final, while West who first won this title back in 1994 beat both Ian Brown & Barnes in the early rounds.

Barnes won the under 21 event & his match with Gary Bloomfield which decided the title edged one way & another before

The Leiston youngster got home 9 in the fifth match.

In the woman’s doubles Gray & Talbot beat Sparkes & Emmerson 8 in the final set, while in the mixed doubles last years winners Dove & Emmerson just lost out after a tense match to Hutchinson & Sparkes 3-2.

Marathon man Hutchinson played in three finals on the day & took part in 14 matches in all.

The Men’s doubles was taken out for the second year running by Warner & Dove who beat Shaw & Ingle 3-0.

"The Suffolk County Closed Veterans Table Tennis Tournament was held at Stowupland Sports Centre and produced some very keenly contested matches in which several Bury League players were involved.

Unfortunately Mick Palmer (Bury Vikings) aggravated a back injury during the warm-up which restricted his movement throughout the day. In the Open Singles he still managed to win through his group but was then beaten by Malcolm Collins (Ipswich) 11-3, 13-15, 5-11, 11-4, 11-5. Phil Sinclair (British Sugar) lost at the same stage to Kenny Lewis (Ipswich) 11-8, 11-8, 10-12, 11-7. The other quarter-finals were contested by Ipswich players with Andy Holmes edging out Rex Manning 11-9, 13-15, 11-3, 5-11, 11-6 and Barry Thain overcoming Charlie Fulcher 6-11, 11-3, 8-11, 11-6, 11-9 in a match which featured some dogged defence and very long rallies.

These results produced a semi-final line-up which included none of the group winners. Lewis beat Holmes 11-5, 8-11, 11-7, 11-9 to set up a final encounter with Thain who disposed of Collins 12-10, 15-13, 16-14 in a very tight match. The final was a fluctuating affair from which Lewis eventually emerged victorious 11-4, 5-11, 8-11, 11-3, 11-5.

In the Doubles Palmer and Sinclair partnered each other for the first time and overcame the Lawshall pair of Clive Grimwood and Dennis Morgan 8-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-7 in the semi-finals. Peter Fordham (Culford Crusaders) and Colin Baxter (Thurston) were also playing together for the first time and enjoyed a good win over the strong Ipswich pairing of Manning and Thain 11-9, 12-10, 18-16 to set up an all Bury League final. After a nervy opening Palmer and Sinclair produced the stronger attacking shots to take the title11-9, 6-11, 11-6, 11-9.

The Over 50's Singles competition saw Palmer and Sinclair reach the semi-finals again. However they were unable to overcome their Ipswich opponents with Thain beating Palmer 11-7, 11-5, 11-6 and Lewis again defeating Sinclair 11-9, 11-9, 8-11, 11-4 to set up a rematch of the Open Singles final. This fluctuated in much the same way but Thain eventually managed to reverse his previous defeat by winning through 11-3, 4-11, 9-11, 13-11, 12-10.

The last event was the Restricted Singles which featured three Bury players in the semi-finals in which Baxter got to grips with Manning's unorthodox play to win 5-11, 11-8, 11-9, 14-12 and Sinclair beat Fordham 11-7, 11-9, 11-9. In the final Sinclair took early control to win the first two legs 11-7, 11-6 but Baxter then competed strongly before Sinclair sealed victory in an epic 21-19 third leg."

The County Junior Championships were held on Saturday 24th January at Culford School Bury St Edmunds, and grateful thanks go to Leiston Press who sponsored the event this year.

23 boys and 7 girls took part in seven events which meant some 160 matches. Play started at 9.30 and took nine hours to complete. The day started with the Under 13 Boys singles, Cadet Girls (U15) singles and Junior Boys (U18) singles groups. All the top players were present and Jake was the No 1 seed in U13’s with James Faulker No2, and as expected they reached there rightful place in the final however Jake was just too strong and won in three straights sets 11-6, 11-3, 11-6. Five girls played in one group which was a closely contested event. Chelsea Bennett was No 1 seed and managed to come through reasonably unscathed, while Charlie Clapson No 2 had rather more problems. It was Sian Cook the lowest ranked that was having a good day and finish in 2nd position.

Lee Barnes was No 1 seed in the Cadet and Junior boys along with Aaron Self at No2. The junior groups went true to form and all four seed’s made it to the semi final stage. Sam Walker in his last season as a junior was at No3, and playing with a suspected broken toe he put up a good fight against Aaron but could not stop the Aaron attack. It was Lee against Jake for a place in the final, and as expected a very close encounter was undertaken between the two. However, it was Lee that had too many big shots to close out the games winning 11-9, 12-10, 11-4.  The final was somewhat disappointing as Lee never allowed Aaron to get into the game and run out a comfortable winner 11-8, 11-7,  11-3.

The Cadet boys and Junior girls groups ran side by side. The girls were in 2 groups of three, and like Sam walker Jacqui Wallace was in her last year as a junior and seeded at 2 an encounter with Chelsea Bennett in the final was expected. Once again we saw an upset in the group stage and Jacqui finished second in her group. This meant she played Chelsea in the semi final and a very close match was seen, but it was Chelsea coming through 12-10, 12-10, 11-8.  The other semi final saw Gemma Butler  meet Charlie Clapson, and once again a very close match which Charlie won 11-4,  11-7,  6-11,  11-6.

With Charlie not having a very good Cadet event she was determined to do better now and this she did taking Chelsea to five games and taking the title 5-11, 11-9, 11-6, 8-11,  11-8.

Seven groups of 3 competed for a place in the quarter finals of the Cadet boys and all 4 seeds came through to fight it out in the semi finals, and we saw Ryan Collins this time taking on Lee which was an all to easy an affair winning 11-5, 11-3, 11-3. Next up was Aaron against Jake the No 2 and 3 seeds, which predictably it went to 5 games with a real battle going on. Aaron just got the first 11-9 only for Jake to take the next 11-3. Aaron then had to pull himself together which he managed to do winning 11-9. Jake came straight back with a 11-4 win and they were now into a deciding game. It was clear that when Jake got a good start he won fairly easy so it was vital that Aaron didn’t let this happen, with the advantage swinging one way then the other it got to 10 all and it was Jake who went for broke and succeeded 12-10 to snatch the match. This set up another confrontation with Lee Barnes and this time Jake seemed a little weary after a series of matches one after the other, and Lee won a little easier 11-7,  12-10,  11-6.

The next event was the open singles where the boys and girls came together. Seven groups of 4 players took part and this was not seeded after the group stage so the winners and runners up played off. This made for some interesting quarter final pairings with Lee playing Aaron and Lee winning 11-7, 11-3, 10-12, 13-11. Ryan Collins then played Sam Walker who had another hard tussle to win in 3 straight games. Jake Collins played Edward Spencer from Bury and the Stowmarket academy and got through in 4 games. Two outsiders came through in the last quarter final and it was Sam Broadbent who won the right to play Jake in the semi final. So Lee came through against Sam Walker thus booking his place in yet another final, and Jake had a reasonably easy passage to meet him yet again. This time Jake was out to get his revenge and took Lee all the way to the fifth game, and Jake seemed to making the dream come true with a 2 point lead at 9-7 only to do a half long serve to allow Lee to get back to 10all, Lee then seized his chance and closed out the match 12-10.

The last event of the day was the Pot Luck Doubles an event that they were all looking forward to. All those players that wanted to play were put into a hat and the partners drawn. Some interesting pairs came out with Sam Walker & Jaqui Wallace at the top and Aaron Self with Chelsea Bennett at the bottom should have made it to the final on paper. However playing together for the first time doesn’t work like that and Sam & Jaqui went down at the first hurdle to Gemma Butler & Sam Broadbent who then lost in the semi-final to Zack Bush & Andy Jones, a pair that gelled together on the day. In the other half the pairing of Edward Spencer & James Manvers just managed to put out the talented pair of Aaron Self & Chelsea Bennett in the 5 game. The final swung one way then the other, but it was Edward & James who came out the victors.

The day ended at 6.45 with the presentation of trophies was made by Mrs Louise Barnes of Leiston Press who kindly sponsored the Championships. Grateful thanks went to Bob Watts the referee on the day, and all those that helped keep the events running throughout the day.
